Upgrade from Sintel Forms for SharePoint to Sintel Forms Studio

We have released Sintel Forms Studio which replaces our popular Sintel Forms for SharePoint app. The old app is now retired and we recommend that any customer using it to upgrade to the new one as soon as possible to ensure they continue to receive updates as they are released.

 

If you are planning to use our products we highly recommend that you use Sintel Forms Studio as we will continually update this app on a monthly basis and it includes all the latest features. We will eventually retire Sintel Forms for SharePoint once all customers using it have been transferred over to the new app.

Why the upgrade

Sintel Forms for SharePoint was released to AppSource in February 2018 and we have been releasing updates to this app every month since it’s initial release. It’s proven very popular with our customers and has an impressive 4.9 / 5 approval rating on AppSource with 19 positive reviews.

From listening to customers we have seen a need for new features including a central location to access forms and the ability to report on and analyze the data captured in forms. Enter Sintel Forms Studio.

This new app leverages the same platform as our old app but extends it significantly including 2 new companion apps called Sintel Forms Hub and Sintel Forms BI. These companion apps will extend the features of our platform significantly for both users and designers by providing a central location to access all the forms across an organisation and enabling the creation of reports & dashboards from the data captured within forms.

 

Option 1 – Automatically upgrading

This is our recommended option and is a pretty simple process involving just 4 steps.

Step 1 – Identify all sites using the old app

You need to remove the old app “Sintel Forms for SharePoint” from all sites in which you added it. If you’re not sure what sites you have added the app to simply contact us and we can provide you with the list of sites using the app. If you open any site in which you have added our app you can click on the Sintel Forms app tile from within site contents and on the screen that opens you can click on the “Show Forms” button which will display all the sites where you have installed Sintel Forms.

Step 2 – Remove the the old app from all sites

This involves running a PowerShell script to remove the app from one or more sites as follows:

  1. Download our sintelforms.uninstall.ps1 PowerShell script to your c:\ drive
  2. Launch “Windows PowerShell” as an administrator
    Run the following command: (only required if you haven’t already installed this PowerShell module)
    Install-Module -Name Microsoft.Online.SharePoint.Powershell
  3. When prompted about installing from an untrusted repository hit y and then enter
  4. If NuGet provider is required hit y then enter
  5. Once everything is installed run the following command to connect to your Office 365 tenant: (replace the text in red with your tenant)
    Connect-SPOService -Url https://sintelit-admin.sharepoint.com

    If prompted about running software from an untrusted publisher hit r and then enter
    You should be prompted to log in and if you’re using MFA then authenticate it

  6. Now that you’re connected to your Office 365 tenant run:
    Set-ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Scope Process

    If prompted about execution policy change hit y and then enter

  7. Change to the directory where you downloaded the PowerShell script cd c:\
  8. Finally, to remove Sintel Forms from a single site use: (replace the text in red with your site URL)
    sintelforms.uninstall.ps1 https://sintelit.sharepoint.com/sites/yourSite/site1
    

    To remove Sintel Forms from multiple sites simply enter them and separate them with a space (replace the text in red with your site URLs)

    sintelforms.uninstall.ps1 https://sintelit.sharepoint.com/sites/yourSite/site1
          https://sintelit.sharepoint.com/sites/yoursite/site2

Step 3 – Install the new app “Sintel Forms Studio”

Once you have removed the old app adding the new one is simple. Using the same list of sites from step 1 you simply need to add the new Sintel Forms Studio app into each site from AppSource.

To install the new app simply open the first site in which you want to add the app and go to Settings> Add an app. Select the SharePoint Store and search for Sintel Forms Studio and Add it. Simply repeat this step to add the app into any other sites you wish to use it in. If you were already using Sintel Forms on the site you don’t need to do anything further as your forms will simply start using the new version of the app.

Step 4 – Update existing links (optional)

The new app uses a different URL i.e. “https://app.sintelforms.com” instead of “https://sintelforms.azurewebsites.net”. If you have shared links to forms you simply need to update those links by replacing this bit “https://sintelforms.azurewebsites.net” with this bit “https://app.sintelforms.com”. This is particularly important for forms that you have shared with external users.

 

Option 2 – Manually upgrading

If you are not comfortable running PowerShell scripts there is also a manual process. The only difference between the automatic and manual process is that the removal of the old app in step 2 is much slower when performed manually rather than when using a PowerShell script.

Step 1 – Identify all sites using the old app

You need to remove the old app “Sintel Forms for SharePoint” from all sites in which you added it. If you’re not sure what sites you have added the app to simply contact us and we can provide you with the list of sites using the app. If you open any site in which you have added our app you can click on the Sintel Forms app tile from within site contents and on the screen that opens you can click on the “Show Forms” button which will display all the sites where you have installed Sintel Forms.

Once you have removed it you must also then delete it from the first stage recycle bin and second stage recycle bin…we know you’re probably thinking the automatic upgrade option is sounding good right about now!

Step 3 – Install the new app “Sintel Forms Studio”

Once you have removed the old app adding the new one is simple. Using the same list of sites from step 1 you simply need to add the new Sintel Forms Studio app into each site from AppSource.

To install the new app simply open the first site in which you want to add the app and go to Settings> Add an app. Select the SharePoint Store and search for Sintel Forms Studio and Add it.
